Join Us at the June 9th Start! Walking Path Dedication in Fargo

You are invited to join the American Heart Association and the Fargo Parks Department for the Start! Walking Path Dedication at Rabanus Park (near the Schlossman Family YMCA, next to the green and white barn) on June 9th at 9:15 a.m.

We have partnered with the Fargo Parks Department to designate six Start! Walking Paths in Fargo. The ceremony on June 9th is a celebration of those designations.

Start! is the American Heart Association’s nationwide initiative calling on all Americans and their employers to live longer, more heart-healthy lives through walking and other healthy habits. The American Heart Association is undergoing a nationwide effort to designate safe, accessible walking paths as Start! Walking Paths. These paths will be denoted on our website, startwalkingnow.org, which is a destination for people across the country who have made a commitment to maintaining or improving their heart health through exercise. The paths will also be marked by small, permanent metal signs along the paths.

I hope you can join us for this brief ceremony and please also extend this invitation to others who might be interested in attending. The ceremony will be short, but will include brief remarks from representatives of the American Heart Association, Fargo Parks Department, Sanford MeritCare and more. We will have heart healthy snacks and take a brief walk so bring your walking shoes! We hope to see you June 9th at the Rabanus Park!

AHA, Nintendo Encourage Americans to Get Active

Today, the AHA announced a first-ever strategic relationship with the popular gaming giant, Nintendo of America — aimed at helping people create healthy lifestyles through physically active play. Our goal is to eliminate common barriers to physical activity with a call-to-action that challenges people to “Get Informed,” “Get Empowered” and “Get Active.” With active gaming products like Nintendo’s Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort, people can find fun and accessible ways to become more physically active.

FIT Kids Act Passes House - say thank you!

On April 21st, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act, bringing us another step closer to ensuring the quality and quantity of physical education in our nation's schools are addressed.

The FIT Kids Act (HR 1585) would establish a framework for schools to closely look at the quality and quantity of PE they are providing, and to supply parents with that information to better understand the PE their kids are receiving.

Please send a note of thanks to your Representative today for his action to improve the health of our kids!

Be A Champion for Healthy Schools and Healthy Kids!

Currently, school districts are required to establish goals for nutrition and physical activity, called local wellness policies. However, there is little to no accountability and insufficient guidance for schools to follow through with their plans. To help address that gap, the NEW Schools Act would: make sure schools are implementing plans, make sure stakeholders and parents are involved in the process, and provide schools with the tools, the information and the funds to accomplish their goals.

Our nation's kids are counting on us to be their champions. As parents, grandparents, teachers, medical professionals, and concerned citizens, we know our youngest generation is struggling to maintain healthy lifestyles, complete with regular physical activity and proper nutrition. To help address that gap, ask lawmakers to support the NEW Schools Act.

Childhood Obesity: An American Epidemic

Today about 25 million kids and teens in the U.S. are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. That’s nearly one in every three young people.

Overweight kids are more likely to become overweight adults. Some experts believe that if obesity among kids continues to increase at this rate, our current generation could become the FIRST in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

What's Happening?
  • Poor nutrition: Only about 20 percent of high school seniors report eating fruit and green vegetables five or more times a day.
  • Unregulated nutrition: Foods offered in school vending machines are often of little nutritional value and can be loaded with fats, sugars, salt and calories.
  • Less physical education: 92% of elementary schools do not have daily physical education classes year-round. About 1/3 of high school students take daily physical education classes.
  • Disappearing recess: Nearly one-third of elementary schools do not schedule recess on a regular basis. Some schools lack the space to play while others feel that recess is a waste of time.
